VA doctor admits to two medication errors

He thought he had a bad case of flu, so he went to the emergency room at the local VA hospital for help. Two days later, the man who had devoted his life to the military and protection of his nation was dead.

His widow recently spoke out for the first time since her husband’s death, revealing that a VA doctor told her that there were medication errors during her husband’s care in 2012.

“There was a medication error,” the VA physician told her. “Not just once but twice.”

She said she is speaking out about the errors at the Asheville VA Medical Center in North Carolina in hopes that similar mistakes can be averted in other facilities.

She said she, her husband and their family had just settled in to Asheville after his retirement from the Army.

The woman claims that the medication errors killed her husband, but the news article on the case did not reveal whether she has filed a medical malpractice claim against the VA. The brief article also does not list which drug was administered or if too much or too little was given the veteran or if he perhaps received the wrong medication.

The woman and her husband had every reason to expect that treatments he was given at the hospital would help, not hurt him. The doctor in the matter said he was “morally and ethically” bound to reveal to her the mistakes made.
